CHAPTER NINETEEN

Ivan was buried inside the conference room with most of the team trying to find out if there were missing DOD documents or pentagon files. His contacts through the bureau were being eerily quiet, so instead, he reached out to some friends with the CIA and even the SAS.

Sophia ate breakfast with the women this morning. She listened as they spoke so freely about everything in their lives, men, sex, children, money, work…anything they wanted to talk about they were free to do so.

She thought of the women back at the compound and wondered how many would survive what was to come. Only a few wanted to be there. Even that seemed strange to Sophia. Why would any woman want to succumb to those men and be forced to do horrible things? Almost three dozen women were at the compound and more than seventy children.

A few over the years took delight in training the younger girls how to be a wife. Teresa’s face popped into her head, the second wife of her father; the older woman seemed ancient even when Sophia was a child. She would come into the work area and grab a young girl, dragging her away.

Sophia watched from the window once as the woman handed a girl over to one of the guards. She pushed her dress up over her hips, holding it in place as she forced her to bend over the bed of the truck while the guard pulled his pants down, forcing himself inside the poor child.

At the time, she didn’t understand what she was seeing, she only knew that it was painful from the girls screams. When it was done, there was blood on her legs and the guard dragged her toward his home. It was as if Teresa took joy in causing the young girl pain and humiliation. Sophia never saw her again, but Teresa was given her justice. When Jethro tired of her, he declared her barren and useless, shooting her in front of the entire church. He shot her, thought Sophia, like a dog.

“Sophia? Baby you want somethin’ to eat?” asked George.

“Please,” she said nodding at George. She tried to hide the fear and pain in her eyes, but the older man was having none of it.

“Baby you got to stop thinkin’ about all the bad and start thinkin’ about all the good or you’re gonna drown in sorrow. Life has lots of good and bad, ain’t nothin’ any of us can do about it. I lost my first wife…terrible it was, but God sent me my Mary and here I am, an old man happy again. She’s brought light to my life where I thought only darkness would be.”

“You are my light,” said Mary, kissing George in front of the women. She turned and winked at the girls, then smiled at Sophia. “Love comes in all shapes, sizes, and colors, Sophia. One thing it doesn’t come in is violence or brutality. That is not love. It’s not even sex.
